World’s Finest 1953 Glendale
Art Houtteman

Often referred to as the “T206 Wagner” of regional issues, this card of Art Houtteman was part of the very rare 28 card 1953 Glendale Meats set. Distributed in the Detroit area, all 28 subjects are Tigers players. Available only in packages of hot dogs, these cards are extremely difficult to find in high-grade. Most examples have multiple creases and are badly stained.

Within the Glendale set, the card of Art Houtteman is by far the most difficult to locate. Although not known for sure, the prevailing thought is that his card was produced in very limited quantities to help protect the manufacturer against the redemption offer for “Valuable Prizes” listed on the backs of the cards. As an interesting side note, back in the 1970’s - the heyday for collecting regionals - this was one of the most valuable cards in the hobby.

The offered example is in beautiful, NM-MT condition. It is extremely well-centered with clean white borders and no product stains present. The coloration is deep and bold, and Houtteman’s image is crystal-clear. All four corners are sharp and squared up. This is the only copy graded NM-MT 8 by PSA, with none higher. A great opportunity to acquire the world’s finest example of a legendary card.
